Recycle Centres – Icons in Action

Client – Dublin City Council Waste Management

Challenge – The Waste Management Department commissioned Yellowstone to tackle the problem of a confusing and disparate signage system throughout its network of Recycling Facilities and Bring Centres. A key design element was the requirement to have a strong, identifiable icon set for centre users who may have reading or language difficulties. The new signage needed to accommodate text in Irish and English – a statute under the Official Languages Act.

Work – Each centre was individually surveyed and assessed to establish current signage and evaluate any shortcomings. Duplication of messages and legibility was also reviewed. Over the course of a few drafts we devised a system of signage which could be easily rolled out to all of the recycling centres. The final design is a clear and concise presentation of the given centre’s services and operational features.

Results – The result is a fresh presentation of the centres and their services making it easy for the visitors to identify what is accepted, how to navigate the centre and when the service is open for business.

Scope for further development – We see potential opportunities for this concept to be rolled out to other forms of media, including:

  • Bring Centre / Waste Management Site Signage
  • Posters / Leaflets
  • Fridge Magnets
  • Calendar Type Fridge Magnets
  • Media Advertising
  • Mobile Apps
  • Website Pages
  • Outdoor Media – Bus and Rail
